Improve your Google ranking
Since 1 July 2019, Google has been using “Mobile First Index” to determine the ranking. What exactly does that mean?
Mobile-First Indexing: literal notice from Google
- Mobile-first indexing means that Google primarily uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Historically, the index used primarily the desktop version of a page's content when evaluating a page's relevance to a user's query. Since most users now use “Google search” with a mobile device, Googlebot will primarily crawl and index pages using the “smartphone agent” in the future.
- While it's not required to have a mobile version of your pages to include your content in Google search results, this is highly recommended.
- It's important to note that there is no separate mobile-first index. Google Search will only use one index. Google Search will continue to display the URL that is most appropriate for users (whether it's a desktop or mobile URL) in search results.
Briefly summarized
- Google determines the ranking mainly based on the mobile version of your website (as of July 1, 2019).
- A mobile version of your website is not mandatory but is highly recommended by Google.
- There is only one index, the mobile-first index. Websites built before July 1, 2019 will continue to be reviewed using the laptop index method. The results are integrated into the mobile-first index.
Should owners of Kopstorm websites be concerned now? No!
No, because:
- The “mobile-first” assessment method is only applied to websites (new domain names) that were built as of July 1, 2019. Websites that were already known by the Googlebots before this date will remain reviewed on the desktop version.
- Google recommends the responsive website. All Kopstorm websites are responsive. Responsive means that the website layout adapts to the device (laptop, tablet, smartphone).
Highly recommended conditions for a good ranking
Some highly recommended conditions that must certainly be met to obtain a good mobile-first ranking:
- Speed: The speed with which your website and pages load is extremely important.
- Make sure that both the content and structure of the laptop and mobile versions are as similar as possible. Definitely avoid that the mobile version is a slimmed-down laptop version, with less textual or visual content, or shorter, less meaningful headings.
